Hyundai India Explores Third Manufacturing Plant to Boost Capacity by 5 Lakh Units

NEW DELHI — Hyundai Motor India is actively exploring the establishment of a third manufacturing facility in the country, a strategic move that could add up to 500,000 units of annual production capacity, according to recent automotive industry reports by Autopunditz.

The expansion plan highlights the South Korean automaker’s aggressive strategy to fortify its footprint in the world’s third-largest passenger vehicle market. As demand for SUVs and electric vehicles surges domestically, Hyundai requires additional manufacturing muscle to maintain its market share and support potential export growth.

Currently, Hyundai operates two manufacturing plants in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, boasting a combined production capacity of roughly 825,000 units per year. The company also recently acquired and is modernizing the former General Motors plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra, which is slated to come online soon.

Despite these ongoing integrations, industry analysts note that sustained domestic sales momentum necessitates a completely greenfield or additional manufacturing hub. A third location would alleviate mounting production pressures and future-proof the automaker’s supply chain against rising regional demand.

Company executives have not yet disclosed potential investment figures, a definitive timeline, or shortlisted states for the proposed plant. However, exploratory talks are reportedly underway with multiple state governments offering lucrative industrial incentives.

As India’s automotive sector rapidly evolves, Hyundai’s decision on the new facility will likely shape its competitive standing against rivals like Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors in the coming decade.
