Congress Moves Candidates to Secret Location Ahead of Gandhinagar Civic Polls
GANDHINAGAR:
The Gujarat Congress has shifted its candidates contesting the upcoming Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections to an undisclosed, secure resort outside the city, party leaders confirmed on Friday. The tactical move, executed late Thursday night, aims to insulate party nominees from potential poaching attempts and horse-trading by rivals ahead of the high-stakes local polls.
This preemptive strategy underscores the intense political rivalry in Gujarat, where municipal elections are viewed as a crucial barometer of public sentiment ahead of state assembly polls. Gandhinagar holds immense symbolic and political value for both the ruling party and the opposition.
By relocating the candidates, the Congress party hopes to maintain absolute unity within its ranks and ensure that nominees remain focused on their grassroots campaign strategy without external distractions or pressures.
Local party coordinators stated that the candidates would remain sequestered in the undisclosed location until the completion of polling. Campaigning will be managed remotely and through pre-scheduled public appearances monitored closely by senior leadership.
Political analysts note that such “resort politics” has become an increasingly common tactic in Indian elections, reflecting deep distrust among rival factions and the high premium placed on securing every single vote in closely contested municipal bodies.
Polling for the Gandhinagar civic elections is scheduled for the coming week, with vote counting expected shortly thereafter.
