NEW DELHI — India has emerged as the world’s premier destination for data centres, largely driven by its robust and fully interconnected national power grid, according to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
The strategic advantage allows digital infrastructure providers to seamlessly shift heavy workloads across different regions to optimize power availability and manage costs.
According to Swarajya, this unified grid infrastructure provides a critical reliability factor that sets India apart from traditional data centre hubs globally. As artificial intelligence and cloud computing drive unprecedented electricity demand, India’s power stability offers a distinct competitive edge.
The minister highlighted that the nation’s massive renewable energy expansion further enhances this value proposition. Facilities can tap into a diverse energy mix, helping global technology giants meet their corporate sustainability targets while scaling operations.
Industry analysts note that India’s vast domestic market, coupled with supportive government policies and submarine cable landings, has transformed the country into a magnet for foreign direct investment in digital real estate. Major global cloud service providers have already committed billions of dollars to construct hyperscale facilities across Mumbai, Chennai, and other emerging tech corridors.
Looking ahead, the government plans to streamline regulatory approvals and introduce further incentives to cement India’s status as a dominant global hub for digital infrastructure and data processing.
